Paramedic Visit

Today, York Region EMS services visited Aldergrove.  The Grade 1's and 2's had the opportunity to meet a paramedic and learn about the services he performs and equipment that is carried in the ambulance. Students asked many questions and then were allowed to go inside the ambulance.  Later, students wrote about their experience.

Play Day

The Primary classes had a great time yesterday as they particpated in 30 different Play Day activities!  The student below attempted to toss a ring over a variety of cones to score points.  Afterwards, students were treated to a freezie so they could cool down after a hot morning!

Team building activities

Today, our students in the primary division had the opportunity to participate in a variety of team building and problem solving activities.  Students learned the importance of communication and cooperation in order to complete a task.  And the bonus? It was a lot of fun!

Science

The Grade 2's have been exploring liquids and solids this week.  Here, students are investigating which solids will dissolve in water.

The Grade 1's are learning about ways to save energy at home and at school. Students had the opportunity to brainstorm their ideas with this graffiti activity.

Firefighter Visit!

Yesterday, firefighters visited the primary classes for the final time this year.  They treated the students to a refreshing spray from one of their pumper trucks.  A fun time was had by all!

Exploring Liquids

The Grade 2's had the opportunity to explore a variety of liquids last week.  They investigated their properties (colour, smell, viscosity) and tried to guess their identity.

New Science topics

In June, the students in Grade 1 will be learning about energy-the different forms, where it comes from, and what they can do to save energy.  The Grade 2's will be looking at the properties of solids and liquids.

Today, students performed a graffiti activity where they wrote down what they think they know about each topic.

Probability activities

The students have had the opportunity this week to practice using probability language while playing a variety of games.  Please encourage your child to use words like likely, unlikely, certain, and impossible when discussing the likelihood of events occurring in their daily life.

Probability

Students have begun to learn common probability terms this week.  We will be trying different games in class while using these terms.  Please encourage your child to try some probability games online in our Google classroom (https://classroom.google.com/r/MjE3NjE1NTYy ).

Healthy eating

The students were challenged to create an image using healthy food last week.  Our class decided to make a cat that consisted on cheese, grapes, broccoli, peppers, and a tortilla.  We didn't win the contest, but we had fun making our cat!

Aquarium Visit

On April 19, the Grade 1 and 1/2 classes had the opportunity to visit Ripley's Aquarium in Toronto.  When we arrived, our class participated in a workshop where students learned about the components of an aquarium.  Afterwards, they had the opportunity to create an aquarium of their own.

Our tour included a visit to the "Dangerous Lagoon" where students got up close and personal with sharks and stingrays!

The jellyfish exhibit was a favourite of many students.

Algebra in action

We have been exploring the concept of equality this week using Cuisenaire Rods. Partners worked together to find equivalent expressions.

Algebra-Equations

This week, students have been learning about the concept of equality which will prepare them for equations.

These students are trying to add or subtract cubes to make the scale balance.

Geometry-Symmetry

This week, students have been learning about symmetry.  They used miras to create symmetrical designs.  This student is using a mira to reflect his name.

Social Studies

The Grade 1's are learning about their communities this month.  They have read maps, created their own ideal community, and learned about community helpers.  In this pictures, students worked in groups to discuss ways to move around in their community.

The Grade 2's are researching other countries in order to compare the lives of others to their life in Canada.

Time

Students have been learning about how to read an analog clock this past month.  In this activity, students moved the hands to demonstrate their understanding of telling time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour.

Students have also had the opportunity to use stopwatches in order to see how long it takes them to perform a task such as jumping jacks or writing the alphabet.

Using thermometers

Temperature

Students have be learning about how to measure temperature using thermometers. Below, the students are observing how the mercury moves with different water temperatures.

Firefighter visit!

In February, firefighters visited our classroom to talk to the students about fire safety.  Students learned about the importance of having a plan to exit the home in case of a fire.  They also spoke about locating the smoke detectors in their home.  Please take the opportunity to speak to your child about fire safety.

Structures and Mechanisms

The Grade 1's have been learning about structures over the past few weeks.  They have investigated a variety of material and determined what is human made and what comes from nature.  As a final task, students were challenged to build a structure from everyday materials.
This student created a chair out of cardboard.      These students are building a house out of sticks.

The Grade 2's are exploring simple machines and how they make work easier.  The students below had the opportunity to try a variety of tools.

The Grade 2's used their knowledge of simple machines to design a mechanism that would be beneficial to people.

Sorting and Graphing in Mathematics

Students have been practicing their graphing and sorting skills.  Below, students were given items to sort with a partner. Then they had to create a bar graph to represent their findings.

In science, Grade 2 students have been learning about simple machines.

The New Year

Happy New Year everyone!  The students have been busy learning new topics in math and science. Data Management will be the focus this month in mathematics.  Below, students sort a variety of objects into a physical Venn Diagram.

In Science, the Grade 1's are learning about Structures and Materials. Students have the opportunity to explore a variety of materials and discovery their properties.

  The grade 2's are investigating Movement this month.  They will learn key terms and experiment with a variety of objects to determine how and why they move.
